TAKS Used For College Admission

Home School Graduates Exempt from TAKS as Criteria for College Admission

Requiring a student to pass the TAKS test as an admission criteria does not apply to home schooled graduates. The TAKS test is a high school measurement used by public schools only.

Home schooled graduates do not have a testing requirement for graduation.  Therefore most colleges and universities will use the THEA test scores, ACT, or SAT scores  as an admission requirement for home schooled graduates. Students must have the required THEA, ACT, or SAT score for admission purposes.

If a student does not have THEA scores, the Texas Success Initiative  (TSI) allows for colleges and universities to give placement tests to those students.  The Placement Test scores will reveal if students need remediation courses or regular college level courses.TSI helps schools to provide an equal opportunity for ALL students to attend college.

Most schools will list general admission criteria for a traditional high school graduate, home school graduates must ask for admission criteria for Home School Graduates.

Texas House Bill 944 further explains the equal right protection for all students to attend college.

There is no reason that a student with a diploma from a home school in Texas could not go to college.  Some colleges and universities are more friendly toward home schoolers than others, so some will be easier to work with.
